QST: Large LED screen installation for Viessmann USA HQ off I-95.

We are proud to announce the installation of the latest QST 10mm Versa series LED Screen for the US Headquarters of the German heating/industrial system conglomerate Viessmann AG in Warwick, RI. The project was meticulously integrated by our local Rhode Island partner, Global Photonics.

The 12′ H by 13′ W digital screen is prominently featured on the face of the building and its haloed by a custom backlit lighting system to give it that bold look.  The traffic count at this location is approximately 80,000 cars per day.

Each of the 156 Versa LED modules is potted with a heat diffusion silicon potting on the back of the PCB board for a complete weather protection with cool running boards. This enables 20 to 30 years of complete protection from the elements.

Qatar has been in a construction frenzy for the upcoming 2022 World Cup, an event requiring billions of dollars worth of new stadiums and infrastructure, as well as an estimated 1.5 million additional workers.

QST and the local integrator won a shootout against Daktronics to secure this project for the new Doha Metro system.

With a horizontal resolution of 17000 + pixels, almost 5 times of a 4K resolution, QST was tasked with designing a solution that would display the entirety of the 426 Ft. long ticker as one continuous zone.

QST engineers provided 2 design revisions and associated prototypes. We also customized the 4 inside 90 degree mitered corner as well as the 4 outside mitered corner in the “elevator shaft” allowing smooth scrolling of text from one side to the adjacent perpendicular side.

Overview of Smart Power Supply Systems for the LED Display application

In the world of  LED displays, “resiliency and redundancy” is a buzz word especially for critical applications such as live broadcasts television, or digital out-of-home–where every minute of up-time is sponsored.  The power system, and in particularly the power supply unit (PSU) is an area susceptible to failures and continues to be an area of innovation for designers.

Even with a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of 207,000 hours (MIL-HDBK-217F (25c) on a Meanwell SP320-5–a commonly used PSU–there remains a slight probability of outage due to normal wear and tear, operating in non-lab environments, outlier events, or unpredictable external factors such as a power surge or weather related events.

Most displays on the market today (2013) are not equipped with any smart power system.  Thus, if and when a PSU goes down, the LED tiles they drive will inevitably go dark. Most designs allow each PSU to drive 3 to 6 tiles, based on the pitch, tile size and power consumption of each tile. This means up to 6 tiles would go out in a chain of dark line across the screen.

The lack of resiliency is apparent on industry leader Daktronic’s product webpage:

“Fully Sealed, 2-to-1 Power Supplies
We dedicate one fully sealed, internally mounted power supply to every two digital billboard modules, making installation easier and rear servicing more convenient. Your message remains readable even if a power supply fails because the failed power supply only affects two modules. Other LED digital billboard distributors may have a single power supply delivering power to large groups of modules. When a power supply fails, it affects a vast section of a digital billboard and the advertisement becomes unreadable.”

This reveals that if a PSU goes out, 2 LED tiles will be affected on a Daktronics system. This is an advantage over others that drive more than 2 tiles per PSU resulting in a larger area being affected.

With resiliency implemented, any dark spots on a screen can be eliminated. As soon as one PSU goes down, the backup source is immediately activated. This switch over is instantaneous and without any visible delay. The probability of a black out, approaches zero as it’s related to the probability of two or three PSUs going out at the same time. Even in the extreme unlikely event that multiple PSUs go out simultaneously, the feedback and intelligence function will reduce the power draw requirement of the affect screen area proportionally, so the area is dimmed, but never goes completely dark.  This concept will be covered in upcoming white papers.

2-1 Backup:
Every PSU is paired with a backup unit.  This is the most straightforward approach, but the downside is that weight of each LED panel is increased considerably. Assume there are 4 PSUs per a 3×4′ (1×1.2m) panel and 4 lbs per PSU on average would result in a total increase of 8 lbs per panel. Cost of additional PSU also needs to be factored, in but the benefits should outweigh the cost incurred from down time on the screen in the field.

Feedback:
Another concept that goes hand in hand with “resiliency” is the “feedback” mechanism.  As a PSU goes out, the feedback is activated, and the service team will be made aware of it’s existence. The location of the down PSU is also identified for a scheduled, proactive, targeted and swift maintenance event.

Small Business Administration Endorses LED Signs

SBA study on Outdoor LED Signs: 15-150% increase in business!

The Small Business Administration cites signs as the most effective, yet least expensive form of advertis­ing for small businesses. More specifically, with an LED sign the cost per thousand impressions (CPT) is as little as 15 cents.  Also, a small business enhancing their signage with an LED sign can see an increase in business from 15-150%.

For example, a business that makes $1,000 a day in gross income adds an LED sign. Traffic quickly increases by the minimum 15%, adding $150 per day in total sales. This turns into an additional $1,050 a week, or $54,600 a year. If using the 150% estimate, the weekly increase in sales becomes $10,050 or $546,000 a year!

Businesses often select their advertising medium based upon the CPT exposures to the public. No other form of advertising comes close to matching the efficiency and cost-effectiveness, dollar for dollar, of an LED sign:

• Newspapers – On average, the cost is about $7.39 per 1000 exposures
• Television – On average, the cost is about $6.26 for 1000 exposures.
• Radio – About $5.47 for 1000 exposures.
• New LED display – Less than $0.15 for 1000 exposures.

For example, if you invest $10,000 on an LED sign with a life span of ten years, the amortized cost on a daily basis is about $0.91. Add the daily electricity fee (approximately $0.20), giving your LED sign expense total of $1.11. If daily vehicle traffic (passing your sign) is 20,000, your cost would be less than $0.15 per 1000 exposures (and that’s counting drivers only)!

The best part is, with an LED sign, you don’t have to worry about missing the target audience, becoming yesterday’s news, or having production fees to change the promotion–which can be costly with TV, radio and newspapers.

With an LED sign, you own the advertising medium. It works 24 hours a day and performs as a very reliable and highly visible salesman; drawing eye-ball off the street and attracting the 80% potential customers who live, play, and commute with a 10 mile radius of your business.
